The translations of Virgil’s “Eclogue” I into English and Portuguese reveal how two distinct linguistic and poetic traditions reshape the pastoral world of the Latin poem. This study traces the interplay of form, rhythm, and meaning in the movement from dactylic hexameter to modern verse, by considering examples in prose, iambic pentameter, decasyllabic, Alexandrine, dodecasyllable, tetradecasyllable, free verse and vernacular dactylic hexametric patterns. English versions, especially from the twentieth century onward, tend to privilege clarity, while the versions in Portuguese, especially Brazilian ones, explore more deeply the melodic resonance of the language, supported by its closer affinity with Latin (such elements are more commonly seen in translation proposals made in Brazil, since Portuguese translations, like English translations, seem to emphasize clarity in translation). The argument draws on skopos theory and on the ideas of Jacques Derrida (2002) and Haroldo de Campos (2011) to suggest that fidelity in translation is not a fixed equivalence but a dynamic process of recreation shaped by the linguistic and cultural contexts. The analysis culminates in a Portuguese version of “Eclogue” I composed in the vernacular dactylic hexameter, a form particularly suited to conveying the cadence, musical structure, and tonal depth of Virgil’s pastoral verse.
