“Queen Tethys” – A Translation of the Preface of the Epithalamium on the Nuptials of Honorius and Maria (c.m. IX), by Claudian

This work presents a translation carried out in free verse style of the preface of an epithalamium by the Alexandrian poet Claudius Claudian. The text, inserted in the group of major poems preceding the epithalamium itself, was composed to celebrate the union between Emperor Honorius, Theodosius the Great’s son, who ruled the western part of the Roman Empire in the middle of the fourth century AD, and Maria, Stilicho’s daughter, general and Honorius’ tutor. In the text, we have an allegory, wherewith the poet will establish a comparison between the marriage of the emperor and Peleus and Tethys’ wedding, hero Achilles’ parents. Besides the translation, accompanied by its original text, the work contains a brief historical contextualization about the author and explanatory notes, which will guide the reader in explaining the various mythological and local figures that are mentioned throughout the poem.
