History of Brazilian Translations of Euripides’ Bacchae and Notes for A New Translation

The aim of this article is to present my method and procedures and to discuss the challenges involved in undertaking a new translation of Euripides’ Bacchae. In doing so, I consider the place of translations of classics in Brazil based on an analysis of other translations of the Bacchae, specifically, those by Eudoro de Souza, David Jardim, Jr., Mário da Gama Kury, Jaa Torrano, and Trajano Vieira. I then consider criteria for translation and solutions to difficulties by presenting excerpts of commentary on the play and my other work within the context of the rich legacy of Brazilian translations of the play.
