Abstract

In the essay entitled L'Exil d'Hélène (Helen's Exile, 1948), the French-Algerian artist Albert Camus (1913 – 1960) enunciates movements of light and shadow when establishing the game of comparisons between the Greeks and the European thought of his time. The purpose of this article is to understand the role of the ancient material in the essay. The method consists of investigating and selecting passages where the author’s reception of classical material, contrasting antiquity with its present time. It is concluded that the meaning of Helen's exile, i. e., the meaning of the reception of the ancients in the essay, is configured from the recognition that when the empire of the spirit, conqueror of regions, bodies and souls, expands to the point of overshadowing whatever is not contained in its will to meaning, Helen (a metaphor for a broad meaning of beauty) evades the world. Keeping the bellicose tone, beauty is exiled.
