Abstract

Este artigo procura contribuir para o estudo da épica grega arcaica ao fornecer uma exploração preliminar das profundas conexões entre gado, riqueza e status nas sociedades heroicas representadas nos poemas desse gênero e uma síntese dos processos de circulação honorífica dos animais pastoris que permeiam a dinâmica dessas sociedades. Será abordada a circulação de gado na forma de prêmios em competições atléticas, como dádivas em contextos de hospitalidade, na forma de recompensas por serviços prestados ou como compensação por danos e injúrias, como dádivas no estabelecimento de laços matrimoniais e como elemento central em rituais de comensalidade
