Abstract

This article explores the complexity of cultural translation through the analysis of the folklore figures Mormó from Greek mythology and Cuca from Brazilian folklore. By comparing these entities, the interactions between cultural traditions and gender representations are discussed. The study reveals that both characters are used as pedagogical tools to control children’s behavior, reflecting social norms about motherhood. By considering the similarities and differences between Greek and Brazilian cultures, a translation that respects and values the original cultural contexts is proposed. The suggested translation for μορμολύκεια finds its point of contact with the folkloric Cuca, highlighting the need for intercultural dialogue to enrich literary and popular traditions.
