The Unconfessable Truths of Leo Strauss and the Problem of Tyranny in Machiavelli

This text consists of a brief effort to clarify some points regarding the specificity of Leo Strauss's reading of the problem of tyranny in Machiavelli. First, I proceed to an evaluation of Machiavelli's role in Strauss's analyses; or rather, how Strauss makes him a central interlocutor in a rather specific sense. It is in a vivid debate with Machiavelli's principles and thought that Strauss seeks to legitimize his main theses on the problem of modernity. Second, I will present some considerations on the problem of tyranny in the context of a confrontation between a Machiavellian political science and a Socratic political science, as Strauss conceived it.
