The purpose of the present article is to examine the reinterpretation of
the phenomena called "life" in Hans Jonas philosophical biology. To do so, Charles
Darwin's Theory of Evolution will be analised to help us understand how natural
selection plays a role in the way species develop. Then, we will delve into Jonas'
philosophical biology and show how, coming from Evolutionism, such scholar shed
new light on the notion of "life" in contemporary thinking. Through his works, Hans
Jonas points out that the darwinist theory on the origin of species broke the mold put
forth by Material Monism, putting "cogitans" back on the track of life. Thus "life" starts
to be seen as both matter and spirit at the same time.
