Information, knowledge and appropriation: notes about the economic meaning of patents and the impacts of the rise of a knowledge-based economy

Abstract

This article discusses the economic meaning of patents. The basic assumption is that information is the key component of patents. However, information, as a commodity, has special characteristics. There is a contradiction between the structural properties of information and the attempts to preserve its appropriability.
