Author Guidelines

Types of documents accepted

1. The Revista Brasileira de Linguística Aplicada follows Open Science modus operandi for research communication, and accepts submissions in Portuguese, English, and Spanish that address the many phenomena related to real-life language, language learning, or language use in diverse contexts. The journal preferably publishes scientific articles and/or academic essays, but it also accepts interviews in the standards defined by the Editorial Board.
2. Submissions that do not include the complete supplementary documentation will not proceed to the pre-assessment. The necessary supplementary documents are mentioned in the next section.
3. RBLA accepts the submission of preprints from the following servers: SciELO Preprints, arXiv, bioRxiv, and medRxiv. The acceptance of preprints from other servers will be assessed by the journal’s editors. The use of preprints is an option and choice of the authors. This condition, as well as the access link to the preprint version, must be communicated at the time of submission, without any detriment to the contribution.
4. RBLA accepts manuscripts resulting from master’s or doctoral research, and authors must disclose this condition at the time of submission. However, merely transcribed excerpts that do not constitute a new perspective on the phenomenon studied will not be accepted. The research supervisor should not be included among the authors of the paper but may be mentioned in the “Acknowledgements” section.
5. RBLA will only accept a new submission from an author or group of authors one year after their last submission. In addition, the minimum interval for an author to publish a new article in the journal is two years after their last publication.
6. Priority will be given to the publication of articles that present research findings and make new contributions to the field of Applied Linguistics. The journal does not publish experience reports that do not fit the model of a scientific article.
7. The content of the articles is the responsibility of the authors. The editors assume no responsibility for the authors’ opinions and statements.

Data availability statement

Authors must disclose the availability of the data used and generated in the research through the completion of the Open Science Compliance Form, which must be attached to the submission. Authors are encouraged to make all content (data, program codes, and other materials) underlying the manuscript available before or at the time of publication. Exceptions are allowed in cases involving legal and ethical issues. The goal is to facilitate the review of the manuscript and, if approved, to contribute to the preservation and reuse of content and the reproducibility of research, depending on the case.

Author's Contributions

1. Authors must send the supplementary document signed or with digital confirmation, declaring each author’s responsibility for the content. According to the recommendations of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) and the Brazilian Copyright Law (Law No. 9,610, of February 19, 1998, art. 15, § 1), RBLA considers as authors those who significantly contributed to research development, data interpretation, and preparation of the text. All collaborators who do not meet these criteria, including master’s, doctoral, and postdoctoral supervisors, should not be included as authors and may instead be mentioned in the “Acknowledgments” section.
2. In the case of coauthored manuscripts, all authors must be indicated on the submission registration page by the author responsible for the submission.

`Preparation of Manuscripts

1. RBLA accepts two types of manuscripts: articles and interviews. Contributions must be submitted with the following structure:

Articles

• Title in Portuguese;
• Title in English (when the contribution is written in English, it must include the title in Portuguese);
• Abstract of 150 to 250 words, in Portuguese and English;
• Keywords in both languages, with 3 to 5 words;
• Text;
• Acknowledgments (optional);
• Funding (mandatory for funded research);
• List of references;
• The articles should be between 7,000 and 10,000 words in length (including references, notes, illustrations, and potential annexes);
• For articles written in Spanish, include title, abstract, and keywords in Spanish, Portuguese, and English.

Interviews

• Title in the language of the text and in English (when the interview is in English, it should include the title in Portuguese);
• Text;
• Acknowledgments (optional);
• Funding (mandatory for funded research);
• List of references (interviews must include references in order to be accepted);
• For interviews in Spanish, include title in Spanish, Portuguese, and English.

1. For all types of manuscripts, the following data are mandatory and must be included in the submission form:

• Name(s) of the author(s);
• Institution / Affiliation of the author(s), in the following format: Full Institution Name (Institution Abbreviation), City, State/State Abbreviation, Country;
• Valid emails of the author(s) for contact;
• ORCID IDs of all authors (if the author is not registered in this database, it is possible to do so at https://orcid.org/register. After registration, the unique identifier number will be available in URL format);
• Funding agencies, if applicable;
• Supplementary documents (see specific section ahead).

1. Contributions must be in Times New Roman font, size 12, with sections and subsections numbered sequentially using Arabic numerals, without punctuation between the number and the title. Section titles should not be indented;
2. The footnote must be reserved for explanatory notes. Citation callouts should be in the body of the text, following the ABNT author-date format;
3. Acknowledgment notes should be at the end of the text, in a separate section titled “Acknowledgments”. In this section, the name of the supervisor of the work may be cited, but they may not be listed as a coauthor. If it is necessary to partially omit the information to guarantee the anonymity of the submission, the complete note must be submitted in a supplementary file;
4. Funding notes should come at the end of the text, in a separate section titled “Funding”. This section is only mandatory for research that receives financial support. If it is necessary to partially omit the information to guarantee the anonymity of the submission, the complete note must be sent in a supplementary file;
5. The work must be submitted anonymously, without any references that could identify the author(s). If the author(s)’ papers are cited, all such references must be replaced by “XXX” in the list of references and the body of the text. The complete list must be sent in a supplementary document.

Digital Assets

1. Illustrations, such as tables, charts, figures, diagrams, and other digital assets included in the documents, must have a resolution of at least 150 dpi.
2. Illustrations must be followed by titles numbered with Arabic numerals, as well as their source (even when they are original to the work). The title must be above the illustration and the source below it, following the ABNT format (NBR 6022, 2018).
3. It is recommended to also send illustrations separately to avoid loss of resolution. The location of the illustrations should be indicated in the text.

Citations and References

Citations and references must follow ABNT standards (NBR 10520, 2023; NBR 6023, 2018), whose basic guidelines are:

Citations

1. Quotations with up to three lines must appear within quotation marks in the text.
2. Quotations with more than three lines should appear in a separate paragraph, indented 4 cm from the left margin, justified, and in size 10 font.
3. Quotations in other languages should be translated in the body of the text, and the source text should be added as a footnote. The author of the translations must be informed after the quotation’s page, following the guidelines of NBR 10520 (2023) – attention must be given to the translation of terminology.
4. Author interventions (alterations, additions) in the direct quotation must be indicated by brackets (see the third example in item 8 below).
5. Omissions in direct quotations should be indicated by ellipses within brackets: […] (see the third example of item 8 below).
6. The expressions idem, ibidem, op. cit., and loc. cit. must not be used.
7. The period must be used to end the sentence and not the citation.
8. Reference notes: these are notes that indicate the sources of the cited work or refer to other parts of the text itself. They must follow the ABNT (NBR 10520, 2023) author-date system, whose basic guidelines are:

• Indirect citation preceded by mention of the author: the author’s last name must appear in upper and lowercase, followed by the year in parentheses (indicating the page is optional):

EXAMPLE: According to Elia (1979), Bopp laid the foundations for the identification of kinship between languages.

• Indirect citation without previous mention of the author: the author’s last name in upper and lowercase and the year must be enclosed in parentheses after the citation. Indicating the page is optional.

EXAMPLE: It is now known that the thesis that Vulgar Latin was homogenous cannot be sustained (Elia, 1979, p. 42).

• Direct citation preceded by mention of the author: the author’s last name must appear in upper and lowercase, followed by the year and page number in parentheses. Indicating the page is mandatory:

EXAMPLE: As Elia (1979, p. 5) reminds us, “[one] of the method’s most important results was the genealogical classification of languages, according to which a group of languages is traced back to a common ancestor […] of which they are phases or differentiations”.

• Direct citation without prior mention of the author: the author’s last name must appear in upper and lowercase, followed by the year and page number in parentheses, after the quotation. Indicating the page is mandatory:

EXAMPLE: “[The] languages of conquering peoples that influence the language of conquered peoples without, however, absorbing it” (Elia, 1979, p. 110) are called superstrata.

• Citations of sources with four or more authors: all authors may be listed, or only the first author followed by et al. In both cases, all authors must be listed in the references. Whichever format is adopted, all citations in the document should be standardized.

EXAMPLE: According to Maciel et al. (2019, p. 163), “the sample is not representative of the women who engage in physical activity in Brasília-DF; it is a convenience sample. In the scientific literature, studies focused on the investigated age group are scarce”.

Supplementary Documents

Authors must pay attention to the following supplementary documents their work may require (some are mandatory, and the submission will not be accepted without them):

• Open Science Compliance Form (mandatory document for all submissions);
• Statement from the Research Ethics Committee: if the contribution involves research with human beings, it will be mandatory to submit the statement from the Research Ethics Committee (Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa − CEP), including the CAAE number, or from other equivalent research ethics institutions. Authors must observe CNS Resolution No. 674/2022 regarding whether there is a need for assessment through the CEP/Conep System. Exceptional cases must be reported to the journal’s Editorial Board for appropriate handling.
• Declaration of the authors’ specific contribution: if the work is coauthored, it will be mandatory to attach a signed document declaring each author’s specific contribution to the preparation of the manuscript.
• Declaration of the use of artificial intelligence (AI) resources: according to the CNPQ’s Policy on Integrity in Scientific Activity, a declaration, mandatory for all submissions, reporting in detail whether or not artificial intelligence resources were used in the work and, if so, how they were used. A template of this declaration is available at Annex I of Resolution 1/2025 of the Anpoll Editors Forum;
• Complete list of references: if previous papers by the author(s) have been cited, a supplementary document must be sent with the list of references to their own works that have been omitted from the submission to preserve anonymity.
• For interviews: a mandatory declaration signed by the interviewee authorizing the use/editing/publication of the interview by RBLA.

Additional Information

Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Resources

 RBLA does not recognize the authorship of texts generated through artificial intelligence tools. AI tools may, however, be used ethically, as support for improving writing; as a resource for copyediting or standardization; as an aid in the creation of illustrations, graphs, tables, and charts, among other similar uses.

1. Authors must report in the manuscript any and all use of AI and will be fully responsible for the content presented. For this purpose, they must follow the “Guide to the Use of Artificial Intelligence Tools and Resources” of the SciELO Network.
2. To comply with the CNPQ’s Policy on Integrity in Scientific Activity, we recommend reading Annex I of Resolution 1/2025 of the Anpoll Editors Forum, which contains a model declaration on the use of artificial intelligence resources accepted as part of the submission.

Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) resources in the peer review process 

1. AI tools are legitimate for assisting in the preparation of reviews, but reviewers must be aware that they assume full responsibility for their use.
2. Reviewers must be extremely attentive to the content and judgments contained in their reviews.
3. According to the CNPQ’s Policy on Integrity in Scientific Activity, to safeguard the authors’ rights and the originality of their manuscripts, any excerpt from the text submitted for review, however short, should not be copied into the AI used.
4. AI should only serve as support for proofreading the review or organizing the reviewer’s own ideas. If used in this way, it is essential that the reviewer indicates in their review which AI was employed and for what purpose through a simple declaration of ethical commitment.

Texts must be submitted through the journal’s page in the UFMG Periodicals Portal, available at https://periodicos.ufmg.br/index.php/rbla. Manuscripts submitted by other means will not be accepted.
