The General Linguistics of Émile Benveniste:
an Analysis of the Sections “Changes in Linguistics” from Problems in General Linguistics I and II

The article aims to explore the hypothesis that Émile Benveniste, despite being known as the “father of enunciative studies”, can be considered a general linguist. From this perspective, enunciation would serve as a means of access to a proposal of general linguistics that programmatically appears throughout his work. This text analyzes the sections Changes in Linguistics, present in both volumes of Problems in General Linguistics, examining how the syrian linguist positions himself in relation to his predecessors and contemporaries regarding the development of linguistic studies both in the past and up to the time of his writing. It also investigates the concept of generality in Benveniste’s linguistics, based on Colombat, Fournier, and Puech (2017), and how it diverges from other approaches in the field of language studies by articulating the factum gramaticae with the factum loquendi, in Milner’s (2021) terms.
