Transthoracic cardiac catheters: handling procedures and complications

Abstract

Transthoracic cardiac catheters (TCC) play an important role in postoperative monitoring, especially in pediatric cardiac surgery. Information obtained from this monitoring, particularly concerning the pulmonary artery, has widely favored the management of postoperative pulmonary hypertension. Nevertheless, the use of these catheters is not riskless. This review article aims to indicate the most frequent complications related to TCC, especially pulmonary artery catheter (PAC), as well as its handling procedures. Data analyses show that the use of TCC is safe, although related complications have high morbid-mortality and demand early intervention from healthcare professionals. The nursing role is highlighted in this context.
