Abstract

In this theoretical paper it was aimed to discuss the landmarks in the area of healthcare associated infections (HAI), contextualize the interface between healthcare associated infections and patient safety, besides to identifying the challenges and prospects for the area of patient safety. It should be noted that the multifactorial approach for the control of HAIs can be facilitated through effective monitoring of the infection, the hand hygiene and resources for adherence to precautions, emphasizing the individual and collective behavior. Reaffirm the responsibility of each individual, concentrating on patient safety strategy "Zero Tolerance" (replying to unsafe behavior and practices that endanger patients and professionals' health). Thus, contributes to the reflection of the professional-responsibility on the quality of individual, collective and institutional practices, as well as a "new look" on doing, thinking and acting.
