Abstract

This is a research report that focuses on questions related to the teaching of health systems management and, specifically, on the relevance of the subject to nursing education. The research aimed to analyse the experience of nursing students with the teaching of health systems management, to identify the progress of the teaching of health systems management in nursing courses, and to propose changes towards self-management. It is a qualitative descriptive-exploratory field study. Data was collected through focus groups interview with eight nursing students. The results revealed the students consider as fundamental the diversification of teaching and learning scenarios and health practices, as well as an interdisciplinary perspective. The students highlight that the learning of management implies social responsibility for the complexity of the human condition that it can't be dissociated from the elements that constitute it. Management as an instrument of the education process produces work and health care processes and reveals the challenges posed by the management to the consolidation of the Unified Health System that depends on the users' demands and needs in the health care process.
