The goal of this study is to analyze the influence of the social-demographic variables on the perception of the stress among hospital nurses. Based in the transactional framework of stress, this is a study of quantitative descriptive and co relational approach. The data was collected among 101 nurses of a hospital of high complexity in the municipal district of São Paulo. Bianchi Stress Inventory, Work Stress Scale and Perceived Stress Scale were used for collecting data. The results demonstrated that the nurses have a medium level of stress (average = 3,80) and the situations perceived as stressful were related to the physical environment in the unit of work, the relational aspects of the work process , the health-disease process of the patient and the organization of the work in the hospital. The statistics showed that the nurse's level of stress are related to: age(p< 0,001), time of academic training(p<0,001), being the main source of income (p<0,041) and being in postgraduate course(p<0,001).In conclusion, the socio-demographic variables have influence on perception of the stress and it is necessary to "care for those who care"to know who are the nurses, how they live, what are their aspirations, motivations and needs to achieve the main objective of nursing care: quality in nursing assistanceDownloads
