This is a descriptive and quantitative exploratory study that aims to evaluate the clinical breast and pelvic examination performed by nurses from a Health Family Program (HFP). The sample was composed by 15 nurses from a Health Family Program of Aracaju and 150 gynecological patients that were seen between October and December, 2007. Two scripts were used, one for structured interview and another for systematic observation based on the Health Ministry rules. Data analysis showed that pelvic examination was incomplete in 83.7% of the cases and clinical breast examination was not performed in 40% of the consultations. Results show that these professionals need to be qualified in order to provide early breast and cervical cancer detection following the recommended stages of the Health Ministry.Downloads
