Fragmented territories
Cape Verde and the aspects of an island urbanity in times of globalization

This essay aims to reconsider concepts such as territory, city, and urbanity in the era of neoliberal globalization within the specific context of Cape Verde, an island state in Africa. If the modernist functional approach has been of little use in the analysis of cities in late twentieth century, neither has the postmodernist approach been appropriate, especially as the discourse on cities has been mainly geared towards megacities and not towards the urban context of economically disadvantaged countries. Island urbanity such as in the case of Cape Verde - within a scenario of global economics - presents many epistemological challenges. The paper will conclude by proposing some working hypotheses, suggesting research as a possible dimension of emancipation.
