Abstract

In the text "Introduction to the Challenges of 'New Censorship'", Isabelle Barbéris explores the distinctive features of contemporary forms of censorship. She highlights that these new forms of censorship are broader and more diffuse, emanating not only from the State, but also from social groups and individuals. Furthermore, they are often based on identity and political criteria, aiming to protect minority groups or specific ideologies. The author discusses the "protective" function of censorship, suggesting that in "new censorship", the protection of groups may be more a matter of visibility than of defending legitimate interests. She also addresses the complexity of these forms of censorship, which often operate indirectly, through mechanisms such as self-censorship and control of meaning, or even within a context of information overload. To support her arguments, Barbéris draws on the theories of authors such as Michel Foucault and Pierre Bourdieu, who contributed to a critique of traditional censorship. She concludes by emphasizing the importance of understanding these new forms of censorship in order to protect artistic freedom and strengthen democracy.
