The objective of this experience report is to present the activities of the extension project titled "Health promotion for individuals with intellectual disabilities and their caregivers" in emergency shelters for atypical families during the flooding period in Rio Grande do Sul. The actions were conducted by the project team, which carried out playful and educational activities to promote oral health for children, their mothers, and family members in shelter situations. The activities included guidance on oral hygiene, information about healthy and potentially cariogenic foods, drawing activities, discussion circles on oral health, distribution of informational brochures, and oral hygiene kits. During the visits, the focus was on welcoming the shelter residents, with an empathetic approach and adaptation of activities for people in shelter situations. Additionally, through its social media, the project mobilized to disseminate information about the location of shelters for atypical families and requests for donations to these places. The extension project fulfilled its social role during the flooding period in Rio Grande do Sul by promoting health, well-being, and support for atypical families in shelter situations.
