Abstract
The term “Cultural Heritage” encompasses a broad array of cultural, legal, and institutional traditions. This article aims to explore some of these concepts and practices as they were embraced in colonial Brazil. Beginning with an interest in Antiquities, we trace the influence of the Portuguese legal system, which was deeply rooted in Roman Law. This influence led to the development of legislation and institutions directly involved in the conservation of cultural heritage. The reconstruction of Lisbon, and the establishment of academies and museums in Portugal played pivotal roles in shaping these practices, which gained renewed significance in Brazil during the period when the Portuguese Court resided in Rio de Janeiro.
