Abstract

ABSTRACT

Published in 1590, Giovanni Paolo Lomazzo’s (1538-1592) Idea del tempio della pittura emerge as a work of major importance within 16th century art theory, being the first Italian treatise about painting to integrate the Renaissance occult philosophy as its conceptual framework. This study discusses Lomazzo’s contact with these philosophical principles and how they were adapted. In his allegorical Temple of painting, the author gather a series of concepts responsible to ground the pictorial operation: painting’s divine origin; the diversity of styles, represented by the governors of painting, which, in turn, are personifications of planetary influences; the concept of Idea, according to which the artistic conception occurs in the artist’s imagination, whose visible representation is nothing but a manifestation of a transcendent concept; the expression of the soul’s movements as a method of attracting cosmic forces and inducing fascination on the viewer, transforming the image into a kind of talisman; and the Neoplatonic concept of image, according to which material beauty presented by the art work has a function of spiritual elevation. Unifying such ideas, Lomazzo contributed to the valuation of painting as an intellectual activity, standing in a wider context, characterized by the diffusion of Neoplatonic philosophy in the aesthetic ideas of the 16th century.
