Abstract

The dimensions of the ornaments present in the set of civil architecture register unique elements in the cultural landscape of the Diamantina heritage, listed by IPHAN and UNESCO, respectively in 1938 and 1999. This study elaborates some reflections on these technical and artistic elements and their developments from the research carried out by the artist and historian José Wasth Rodrigues (1891-1957), published in the 1940s, entitled “Architectural Documentary” and later by the researcher from Minas Gerais Sylvio de Vasconcellos. It establishes a dialogue between some decorative details present in civil architecture pointed out by the authors, also supported by the collection of photographic images, part of the inventory carried out by EAUFMG in 1998 for the purposes of its worldwide listing. Part of these decorative details, identified and drawn by Rodrigues in his “documentary”, disappeared from the facades and interiors of this set, these particularized by the colors of the ornaments, lightness of the railings, details of the capitals and fences, in addition to the paintings from the ceilings. The architecture, its ornaments and this imagery collection make up traces of the uniqueness of this heritage, in addition to seeking to define new artistic and technical aspects of a peculiar look to safeguard this collection. These characteristics interact with the local culture, while reinforcing the clarification and appreciation of other heritage and traditions in the region.
