Abstract
This article aims to contribute to discussions about quadrature painting in Minas Gerais, carried out by Mestre Athaíde, during the 19th century. The approach is necessary for the systematic study of the pictorial language used by the Master in the materialization of the decoration of the lining of previously established churches. The proposed clipping is the lining of the naves: Chapel from the Third Orders of Saint Francis in Ouro Preto; Saint Antonio Main Church in Ouro Branco, as well as the linings of the chancels: Saint Antonio Main Church in Santa Bárbara; Saint Antonio Main Church in Itaverava; Chapel of the Brotherhood of Our Lady of the Rosary in Mariana. The purpose of the study is the analysis of the pictorial composition idealized by Mestre Athaíde, based on the comparative appreciation of the five observed paintings, with verification of the recurrent and singular feigned architectural elements and structures.
