Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the image of the Apocalyptic Virgin in the narthex of the Matriz de Nossa Senhora de Nazaré (Our Lady of Nazareth Main Church), created by Antônio Rodrigues Bello in the first decades of the 18th century, in the Ouro Preto village of Cachoeira do Campo. Unlike the other paintings in the triptych, which present direct iconographic sources already identified by Hannah Levy, in the 1940s, this painting presents a freer composition by the artist allowing to glimpse the visual and cultural references of the baroque mindset in which both the artist and his production were immersed. In this sense, Bello’s painting is hereby compared to a series of pictures. Possible direct and indirect iconographic sources used by him in the composition of the scene are identified, which allows iconographic readings and discussions about the intentionality and the discourses within the scene presented.
