Abstract

Considering that the Jesuits were the first religious order to arrive in Portuguese America with the mission of catechizing the natives and educating the families of the settlers, they were also responsible for building the first churches and schools in these lands. Having been overcome the debates about an alleged “Jesuit style”, the article sheds light on the importance of Francisco Dias, a lay brother of the Society of Jesus who had him at the construction site of the church of São Roque in Lisbon as an “architect”, for the circulation of architectural models adopted for the building of the first temples of the Ignatians in Brazil.
