Abstract
This paper provides a brief iconographic and compositional analysis of the set of paintings on the ceiling of the sacristy of the church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário, in the former Jesuit complex in the city of Embu, state of São Paulo, with emphasis on the symbolic elements of the Arms of Christ, a reference to the Passion of Christ in the central part of the nine panels on the ceiling. Also analysed are the paintings of brutescos (or grotesques) that surround the Arms of Christ, and the so-called chinesices, a theme present as a decorative element in the frames of the paintings, establishing possible connections with the global circulation of artefacts, images and people.
