Abstract
This article focuses on the artist Valentim da Fonseca e Silva, better known as Mestre Valentim, one of the main artists of colonial Brazil, sculptor, carver and urban planner in Rio de Janeiro. His works are well known in Brazilian art, however little is known about his biography. Thus, this work will address his personal history, artistic work and in particular his works on the old church of São Pedro dos Clérigos, in the center of the city of Rio de Janeiro, completely demolished in 1942 during the renovation of Mayor Pereira Passos, in the still headquarters of the Federal Government of Brazil, the city of Rio de Janeiro.
