Abstract
The Church of São Lourenço dos Índios is one of the most significant examples of artistic production from the Missionary phase within the context of early colonial art in Brazil. Its importance lies not so much in its age but in the artistic quality of both its architecture and its integrated assets and imagery. Brazilian art would soon show that, although shaped by European norms and treatises, it was open to the perspective of the native population, who would participate in its production in workshops created by Jesuit priests, often under the most challenging conditions.
