Author Guidelines

Bibliotecas Universitárias: pesquisas, experiências e perspectivas is an open access scientific journal linked to the University Library (BU) of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG).

The journal does not charge submission or publication fees. All articles are licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0).

Manuscripts submitted to the journal must comply with the guidelines regarding content, standardization and presentation format, according to the Templates and guidelines below.

1. Scope

Papers aligned with the scope of the journal, which covers Library Science, Information Science and related areas, with a relevant contribution to the advancement of knowledge and professional practice, will be accepted.

2. Originality and ethics

Only original, unpublished manuscripts that are not under evaluation by another journal will be accepted. Preprints are allowed, as long as the DOI of the repository is provided.

Textual similarity checking tools will be used to detect plagiarism.

3. Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools is permitted only as technical support, limited to activities such as linguistic revision, translation, suggestion of textual structure or data organization.

It is mandatory to clearly and precisely state the name of the tool used, its purpose and at which stage of the process it was used.

The entire content of the manuscript must be fully revised, validated and assumed by the authors, who are responsible for the veracity of the information, the originality of the text and the correctness of the references.

4. Conditions of authorship

All authors must have made a significant contribution to the conception of the work, the writing or critical revision of the content, as well as approving the final version of the manuscript. We recommend consulting the CRediT Taxonomy to identify possible authorial contributions.

AI tools cannot be attributed as authors. Authorship is reserved for individuals who meet the criteria of the CRediT Taxonomy and can respond ethically and intellectually to the work.

4.1. Degree requirements

Individual authorship: a minimum master's degree is required.

Co-authorship: at least one of the authors must have a master's degree.

Work by undergraduates and graduates is only accepted in co-authorship with a researcher who meets the degree requirement.

5.Types of work accepted

The following types of work are accepted:

  • Article (original, review or theoretical): presents the results of empirical or theoretical research, or carries out a critical, systematic or integrative review of scientific production in the area covered by the journal.
  • Experience report: describes relevant professional practices, with reflections and lessons learned that contribute to improving activities in the journal's
  • Academic essay: an analytical and argumentative text that discusses a relevant topic on a theoretical basis, defending a thesis in an original and well-founded
  • Book review: a critical or descriptive analysis of a work published in the last two years, related to the journal's thematic scope.
  • Interview: unpublished dialog with professionals or researchers who have made significant contributions to the field, either through their practical work or their academic output.

6. Mandatory documents for submission

  • Manuscript in .doc, .docx or .odt format, according to the templates:

  • Complementary Information" document, in .pdf format, duly completed and digitally signed by all authors.

7. Manuscript length

  • Article: between 12 and 25
  • Experience report: up to 12
  • Academic essay: up to 10
  • Book review: up to 4
  • Interview: up to 10

8. Language

  • Texts are accepted in Portuguese, Spanish or English.
  • All submissions must contain the title, abstract and keywords in Portuguese and english.
  • It is the authors' responsibility to ensure that the manuscript is grammatically and orthographically correct.

9.  Structure and formatting of the manuscript

  • The manuscript must be submitted in .doc, .docx or .odt format.

9.1.Mandatory structure

9.1.1 Articles:

Title (in Portuguese and English): must be clear and objective, without abbreviations, parentheses or formulas. The subtitle, if there is one, must be preceded by a colon (:). Use capital letters only for the first word and for proper names or terms that require a capital letter.

Structured abstract (in Portuguese and English): must be between 150 and 250 words long, organized in a single paragraph that includes the following elements: context, objective, methodological procedures and final considerations. No acronyms, formulas or quotations should be used.

Keywords (in Portuguese and English): minimum 3 and maximum 5 keywords, separated by semicolons;

Introduction, theoretical basis, methodological procedures, results and final considerations;

Citations (ABNT NBR 10520:2023) and its updates;

References (ABNT NBR 6023:2018) and its updates.

9.1.2 Other types of publication:

Title (in Portuguese and English): must be clear and objective, without abbreviations, parentheses or formulas. The subtitle, if there is one, should be preceded by a colon (:). Use capital letters only for the first word and for proper names or terms that require a capital letter.

Resumo (in Portuguese and English): should be between 150 and 250 words, organized in a single paragraph.

Keywords (in Portuguese and English): a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 5 keywords, separated by semicolons.

Introduction, theoretical basis, methodological procedures, results and discussion and final considerations (as necessary);

Citations (ABNT NBR 10520:2023) (as required).

References (ABNT NBR 6023:2018) (as required).

10. Citations

Citations are references to information taken from other sources and should be presented in the body of the text, using the author-date system (e.g. Silva, 2020).

Citations must follow the ABNT NBR 10520: 2023 style and its updates. All sources cited throughout the text must appear in the list of references at the end of the manuscript.

Citations can be direct (literal transcription) or indirect (paraphrase).

10.1 Direct quotations

These are literal transcriptions of the original text and require an indication of the page from which they were taken.

Short quotations (up to three lines): must be inserted in the paragraph, between double quotation marks, without different formatting.

Examples:

“A língua [...] é a linguagem que utiliza a palavra como sinal de comunicação” (Terra, 2018, p. 13).

According to Parker (2011, p. 36), “o acesso aberto ao conhecimento científico ocorre por meio da publicação dos resultados da pesquisa científica na web”.

Long quotation (more than three lines): must be presented in a highlighted paragraph, with a 4 cm indentation from the left margin, without quotation marks. The source and page should be indicated at the end.

Use Arial font, size 11, single line spacing, without quotation marks.

Deletions from the original text should be indicated with brackets and ellipsis:

[...]

This indicates that part of the content has been omitted, without compromising the meaning of the quotation.

Examples:

"Language [...] is the language that uses the word as a sign of communication" (Terra, 2018, p. 13).

10.2 Indirect quotations

This is the reformulation of the author's ideas in the author's own words. Do not use quotation marks.

Examples:

As Terra (2018) points out, language is a type of language that uses words as communicative signs.

For Parker (2011), open access occurs through the publication of results on the internet.

University librarians act as educational agents by promoting information competence, going beyond access to technical-scientific literature (Paula; Reis, 2017).

11. References

References should be presented at the end of the work, in alphabetical order. They must include all the sources cited in the text, prepared in accordance with ABNT NBR 6023:2018 and its updates. Each reference must contain the elements necessary to identify and locate the document cited.

The following are examples of references corresponding to the sources mentioned in item 9 of these guidelines.

12. Progressive section numbering

The sections of the text should be numbered using Arabic numerals, following a progressive order up to the fifth level (quinary section) at the latest.

Each section number must be aligned to the left margin, preceding the section title and separated from it by a space, without the use of graphic signs such as periods, hyphens, dashes or parentheses between the number and the title. The title of the section must also be aligned to the left.

Primary sections should be numbered with whole numbers starting from 1 (e.g.: 1, 2, 3...), while subsections should respect the numerical hierarchy, being represented by numbers separated by a period, depending on the level (e.g.: 1.1, 1.1.1, 1.1.1.1, 1.1.1.1).

13. Explanatory notes

Explanatory notes should be used to provide comments, clarifications or additional information that does not fit directly into the body of the text.

They must comply with the following guidelines:

  • Be indicated by sequential Arabic numerals, inserted in the body of the text;
  • Be presented at the bottom of the page

14. Foreign words

Foreign words and expressions should be written in italics, including terms such as apud (cited by), idem (the same), ibidem (in the same place) and et al. (and others).

15. Acronyms

At the first occurrence in the text, write the name in full followed by the acronym in brackets.

Example:

 Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG)

After this first mention, use only the acronym: UFMG.

16. Figures, charts and tables

Figures, charts and tables must be inserted in the body of the text, next to the passage to which they refer.

16.1 Figures

These include graphs, illustrations, drawings, photographs and any other visual element that does not qualify as a table or chart.

Presentation rules:

  • They must be cited in the body of the text and inserted as close as possible to the part of the text to which they refer.
  • The upper part of the image should contain the designation of the type of element (Figure), the sequential number according to the order of appearance in the work, the indent and the title. Example: Figure 1 - Figure title (centered, Arial font, size 10, single line spacing).
  • The source of the figure must be indicated at the bottom, aligned to the left of the margin of the figure, without graphic highlighting, even when it is the author's own production.
  • Use Arial font, size 10, for all elements (title, content and font).

16.2 Tables

Tables are used for qualitative data, predominantly composed of information in textual format.

Presentation rules:

  • They should be cited in the body of the text and inserted as close as possible to the section of text to which they refer.
  • The top of the table should contain the type of element, its sequential number, and the respective title. E.g.: Table 1 – Table title.
  • The source must be indicated at the bottom of the table, even when it is the author of the work. E.g.: Source: Prepared by the author (2025).
  • The table and its title must be centered on the page.
    The source and caption must be aligned with the left margin of the table.
  • Use Arial font, size 10, for titles, contents, sources, and captions.

16.3 Tables

Tables should only present numerical statistical data, in accordance with the IBGE's Tabular Presentation Standards.

Presentation rules

  • They must be cited in the body of the text and inserted as close as possible to the passage to which they refer.
  • They must contain, at the top, the designation "Table", followed by the sequential number in Arabic numerals, a dash and the corresponding title (example: Table 1 - Table title), centered and in Arial font, size 10, single spacing between lines.
  • Do not use vertical lines on the left and right edges of the table.
  • The source of the data must be indicated at the bottom of the table, aligned with the left margin of the table, without graphic highlighting, even when the data is the author's own.
  • The table and its title should be centered on the page.
  • Use Arial font, size 10, for the title, content and font.

17. Instructions for submitting manuscripts

During the submission process, please follow the steps below carefully:

  1. Indicate the language of the submission.
  2. Fill in the title of the manuscript.
  3. Select the appropriate section, depending on the nature of the text: Article, Experience Report, Essay or Interview.
  4. Confirm compliance with all the items on the submission checklist.
  5. Consent to the Privacy and Personal Data Protection
  6. Fill in the title, abstract and keywords in two languages: Portuguese and english.
  7. Include the references cited in the work, in accordance with ABNT NBR 6023:2018 and its updates.
  8. Attach the manuscript file according to the template provided by the journal, without any identification of authorship.
  1. Attach the "Supplementary information" document provided by the journal, duly completed and digitally signed by all authors.
  2. Enter the full details of all authors, in the order in which they should appear in the publication:
    • Full name
    • E-mail address
    • Country
    • Lattes CV URL
    • ORCID ID
    • Check the option “Send email to request ORCID authorization from contributor”
    • Summary of the biography, according to the instructions for filling in the "Additional information" document
    • Search for institutional affiliation and ROR ID (if not found, manually enter the name of the institution in the "Institution/Affiliation" field)
  3. Include comments to the editors if you have any information relevant to the evaluation of the manuscript.
  4. Accept the Privacy and Personal Data Protection Statement again, if requested at the end of the process.

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • All authors are aware of the submission, agree with the journal's policies, and have digitally signed the "Supplementary Information" document, which must be submitted in .pdf format.
  • The manuscript is original and unpublished.
  • The work is not under review by another journal. If it is, this must be stated in the "Comments to the Editor" field.
  • The authors declare that the manuscript contains no plagiarism, data fabrication, falsification, or improper manipulation of information.
  • The manuscript was prepared according to the journal's template and is in .doc, .docx, or .odt format, as specified in the Author Guidelines.
  • All cited sources have been properly referenced in the text.
  • Author identification has been removed from both the manuscript text and the file properties, ensuring a blind peer review process.
  • The submission fully complies with the instructions provided in the Author Guidelines.
  • The use of Artificial Intelligence tools, if any, has been clearly disclosed, in accordance with the journal’s policy.

Privacy Statement

The journal Bibliotecas Universitárias: pesquisas, experiências e perspectivas, managed through the Open Journal Systems (OJS), commits to the protection of its users' personal data, in compliance with Law No. 13,709/2018 – Brazilian General Data Protection Law (LGPD).


1. Personal Data Collection

For platform registration, the following personal data are collected:

  • ORCID (mandatory, according to journal policy);
  • First name and last name;
  • Institutional affiliation;
  • Country;
  • Email address;
  • Username;
  • Password.

This data is necessary to ensure the proper identification of authors, reviewers, editors, and other participants in the editorial process.


2. Purpose of Collection

The personal data provided to the journal are used exclusively for the provision of services related to scientific publication, such as: management of the editorial workflow (including submissions, evaluations, and publications), communication with authors, editors, and peer reviewers, dissemination of published articles, provision of technical support when necessary, and ensuring proper authorship attribution.

The journal does not use the data for commercial purposes, nor does it share them with third parties without the consent of the data subject, except in cases provided by law.


3. Data Storage and Security

Personal information provided by users is stored on the OJS platform, used by the journal for editorial management. This system adopts technical and organizational measures aimed at information security, with the objective of protecting data against unauthorized access, accidental loss, undue alteration, or any form of misuse.


4. Data Sharing

The data provided by users may be shared with indexers and academic platforms, when necessary for the dissemination of scientific output (e.g., ORCID, DOI), always in compliance with the principles of purpose and minimization of data processing.


5. Data Subject Rights

In compliance with the LGPD, the data subject has the following rights:

  • Confirm the existence of data processing;
  • Access their personal data;
  • Correct incomplete, inaccurate, or outdated data;
  • Request the anonymization, blocking, or deletion of unnecessary or excessive data;
  • Revoke consent, when applicable.

6. Definition of Users

The journal operates through the OJS system, which allows the registration and participation of different user profiles, as described below:

  • Authors: Responsible for submitting scientific works, monitoring the editorial process, and responding to requested revisions;
  • Editors: Responsible for coordinating the editorial workflow, including the evaluation, editing, and publication of manuscripts, ensuring the scientific quality of the journal;
  • Reviewers/Peer Reviewers: Specialists invited to review submitted articles, issuing technical or scientific opinions that support editorial decisions;
  • Readers: Users who access and consult published content, whether or not they are registered on the platform;
  • Journal Managers: System administrators, responsible for platform configurations, user management, and supervision of the entire editorial process.
