Abstract

This is an essay on the singer's craft. The objective is to discuss a whole terminology consecrated by the dictatorship of public opinion, which, in the author's opinion, harms the understanding of the nature of singing. The theoretical-methodological reference is Critical Poíesis, a new epistemology developed at USP in Ribeirão Preto. The main consideration is the inadequacy of terms such as lyrical and
erudite.

  • Rubens Russomanno Ricciardi, University of São Paulo (Brazil) (USP)

    Composer, conductor, pianist and musicologist. He was a full professor at the School of Communications and Arts (ECA-USP), and is currently an accredited advisor at the PPG in Cultural Studies (research line: Critique of Culture / Critical Poesis) at the School of Arts, Sciences and Humanities (EACH-USP) and a full professor at the Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters of Ribeirão Preto (FFCLRP-USP), where he teaches Philosophy and History of Art, Harmony & Counterpoint, Brazilian Music and Orchestra Practice. He is the founder of the Music Course at USP in Ribeirão Preto (with its pioneering Bachelor's Degree in Viola Caipira) and also the founder and professor responsible for the university's stable bodies, such as the USP Philharmonic, the Ensemble Mentemanuque, the Research Center for Performance Sciences in Music (NAP-CIPEM), the USP Concerts series in Ribeirão Preto and São Carlos and the USP Children's Music Project in Ribeirão Preto and São Joaquim da Barra. He is responsible for the "Gilberto Mendes" New Music Festival. In Brazil, he was a disciple of Olivier Toni, Gilberto Mendes, Stephen Hartke and Régis Duprat. As a scholarship student in Berlin at Humboldt University, he was supervised by Günter Mayer. He is the author of the books Contra o identitarismo neoliberal - um ensaio de poíesis crítica pela apologia das artes by Editora Contracorrente (2023); As Solfas de Mogi das Cruzes - musical edition and historical notes (2022, together with Odair Aparecido de Paula); Música Popular Brasileira Antiga (2015) and Música na madrugada do destino - uma poética musical para o século XXI (2023). His symphonic composition Candelárias - uma abertura trágica (1995) was awarded a prize in Mexico (2001).
