Abstract

This text addresses the genesis of the Brazilian Art song As Pombas, composed by Edmundo Villani-Côrtes (1930) based on a sonnet by Raimundo Correia (1859-1911), in celebration of the first volume of the Revista de Música Vocal Erudita Brasileira, an scientific periodical dedicated to the production of Art songs, operas and Brazilian choral compositions. Villani-Côrtes, now 93 years old, is one of the most active and creative representatives of the current generation of vocal composers in Brazil, and chose as the inspirational theme for his most recent Art song the flight of doves, birds that embody purity, peace and spiritual elevation. Following the text, we present a copy of the original manuscript of As Pombas, followed by an edition made by Elias Magalhães.
