Abstract

The main objective of this article is an analysis of the Brazilian Art song Natal, by Ernst Mahle, with a special focus on the shifts in persona. The hypothesis is that the shifts in narrative voices are aligned with important changes in the musical structure of the song. References for the musical analysis include the works of Cone (1974), Stein and Spillman (1996), Straus (2013) and Kostka, Payne and Almén (2013).
