Abstract

This essay addresses data on the representation of opera singers who performed in Rio de Janeiro in the 19th century based on information provided by the Rio press. The dissemination of information from the aforementioned period contributed to establishing the names of foreign artists who performed in Brazil in order to also favor local commerce, with the sale of cartes de visites and sheet music. Historically, after the arrival of these artists, there was a bifurcated sequence: either disappointment, followed by complaints and debates in the newspapers; or the success, sometimes gigantic, leading to exacerbated attitudes that never failed to attract the attention of the press.
