Resumo

This study examines the difficulties and research conditions I experienced during my ethnographic research over the past few years, to provide insight about the nature of the situation and the ethnographic relationship, as well as the research process and the knowledge involved. If this reflection is necessarily related to the specificity of my ethnographic experience, the ideas propounded here should agree with the concepts proposed in anthropology, ethnology, and sociology during the last thirty years. This study questions the knowledge process proposed by anthropology via participant observation and assumes that for the anthropologist, the object of research is not neutral but, rather, involves a personal journey and a specific project. By doing so, this study demonstrates that it is possible to abandon the unproductive antagonism between objectivity and subjectivity in anthropological research and to reconcile the “purity” of the research data gathered with the necessary involvement of the researcher in the field. Further, this study will reveal how to break intellectually and personally with the dogma of the purity of research findings, not only intellectually but also concretely, and how to address the researcher’s commitment and position in the field of research.
