O artigo discute como as mudanças nas formas de pensar na Nova Inglaterra, entre os séculos XVIII e XIX, se refletiram nas condições materiais de vida, a partir da análise das propostas de Henry Glassie (1975) sobre casas tradicionais e James Deetz (1977) sobre cultura material da chamada Ordem Georgiana.
