Um rico corpo de pensamento – desenvolvido por arqueólogos e outros – aponta o caminho para a compreensão dinâmica de quem são os humanos, mas, ainda assim, a arqueologia luta para ser mais do que uma serva. Indiscutivelmente, o problema é mais de método do que de teoria: o que conta como dados, como nós arqueólogos categorizamos as coisas e quais são os nossos problemas. Este artigo examina as relações de trabalho no início da colônia da Virgínia por meio de cachimbos de barro. Esses artefatos, muitas vezes tratados como emblemas de identidade étnica, são aqui usados para entender uma sociedade no processo de transformar suas pluralidades nas categorias que tomamos como certas.
