Forensic archaeology in Brazil
interdisciplinarity and its legal and humanitarian relevance

Forensic archaeology, which focuses on the analysis of tragic and violent events, has gained popularity among academics and non-academics. This article discusses the scope of the field of forensic archaeology, which integrates knowledge from criminalistics with legal issues (criminal law and human rights), while engaging with the social sciences in relation to social problems. Archaeologists seeking to develop in the forensic field must go beyond traditional practices, incorporating interdisciplinary methodologies and considering the specific challenges of the field. In this sense, it is necessary to discuss the education of forensic archaeologists in order to align academic guidelines with social needs. This article expands the concept of forensic archaeology, highlighting its relevance to humanitarian causes and the social responsibility of professionals in the field. Thus, reflection is encouraged on the training of forensic archaeologists and their role in the pursuit of justice and dignity, with the development of robust investigations being essential to positively influence current public policies.
