Different medial forms to adapt literary narratives contribute to expand their reach to a public not familiar with their rendering in the original media. Stephen Frears’s filmic adaption (1988) of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ classic Les liaisons dangereuses (1782) is a prime example of such dynamics as is Leon Moh-Cah’s (2021) short-film adaptation of Frears’s work. By means of a mediatic process, Moh-Cah translates into a one-minute animation Frear’s version of the epistolary novel of the “dangerous liaisons” at play in18th-century France nobility social games. This paper aims at, initially, presenting Laclos’s novel and its filmic adaptation by Frears. It then examines Moh-Cah’s reconstruction of Frear’s work in a one-minute short film. It uses the concepts of transmediality and representation (Elleström, 2017, 2019, 2021) to examine the means by which imagetic and symbolic references in Moh-Cah’s work ressignify Frears’s movie and create a new media product.
