TERAPIA FOTODINÂMICA
UMA OPÇÃO NA TERAPIA PERIODONTAL

O principal objetivo do tratamento periodontal é o restabelecimento da saúde periodontal pela remoção dos depósitos bacterianos e calcificados presentes na superfície radicular. Seu sucesso depende da eliminação dos agentes que promovem a destruição dos tecidos periodontais. No entanto a terapia mecânica não é capaz de eliminar os patógenos periodontais devido a capacidade que alguns microrganismos apresentam de invadir o interior dos tecidos, muitas vezes inacessíveis aos instrumentos periodontais. Desta forma, a busca por métodos coadjuvantes ao tratamento periodontal tem aumentado nos últimos tempos. Frente a estes fatos, constitui propósito do presente estudo apresentar uma revisão da literatura sobre o efeito da terapia fotodinâmica nos patógenos periodontais. A análise da literatura demonstrou que a terapia fotodinâmica mostrou-se eficaz na redução bacteriana, inclusive nas bactérias periodontopatogênicas, apresentando-se como um coadjuvante promissor à terapia periodontal básica. Embora existam evidências científicas desses achados, novos estudos devem ser realizados para se determinar parâmetros específicos do laser e do agente fotossensibilizador, para tornar a terapia fotodinâmica mais efetiva e previsível.
