Ameloblastoma
consequences of a misdiagnosed case
Keywords:
Ameloblastoma, Odontogenic tumor, Mandibular tumorAbstract
The present report shows the case of an ameloblastoma located in the mandibular incisors which was misdiagnosed both as a periapical alteration of endodontic origin as well as a periodontal alteration, treated over a 4-year period in which no regression of the lesion could be observed. The patient then was referred to the Stomatology clinic of School of Dentistry, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais. Clinical and radiographic exams and an incisional biopsy produced the diagnosis of an ameloblastoma. The patient then underwent surgery to remove the tumor, taking into consideration the limits found within prior studies in the literature. Such a case exposes an extensive mutilation which occurred as a consequence of a mistake made in the initial identification of the tumor, thus generating a delay in the definitive treatment.
