Abstract

For this study, "conflict" is understood as areas where land use and land cover are incompatible with the environmental function of riparian Permanent Preservation Areas (APPs), as well as with their legal classification. Inadequate occupation of APPs can lead to various environmental problems, such as soil degradation, water contamination, among other impacts that compromise ecosystem balance and the preservation of water resources. Thus, this study aims to analyze and quantify land use and land cover within the Permanent Preservation Areas in the municipality of Miracema/RJ, using map algebra through an open-source geographic information system to identify potential conflicts occurring in the area. The results revealed the existence of incompatible uses within the Permanent Preservation Areas, generating conflicts, with agricultural activities being the most prominent land use in these areas. Another important finding is that most of the conflict-free areas are located within a municipal Conservation Unit, highlighting the key role of the Conservation Unit in preserving the municipality's riparian APPs. The study underscores the need for environmental regularization measures and sustainable land management policies to mitigate conflicts between land use and land cover and the conservation of Permanent Preservation Areas in the municipality.
