Abstract

In this paper, we analyse the concept of aesthetic education shown in the work Letters upon the aesthetic education of man, by Friedrich Schiller. As long as Schiller sees the clash between formal drive and sensuous drive as the source of fragmentation of man and the source of evil in society, the establishment of ludic impulse is pointed by the philosopher as a path through which it is possible to restore harmony in man and in society. For Schiller, such state can only be reached through aesthetic education, in which the free play between reason and sensibility, while absence of rules or concepts, is identified with real human freedom. With its broad sense of rationality and its formative potentials, Schiller’s aesthetic education is greatly relevant in contemporaneity, particularly when it comes to overcoming the instrumental and fragmentary character of knowledge and the cognitivist reductionism in the field of education.
