Abstract

This study focuses on teacher’s professional knowledge about teaching poetry in the first years of
schooling. It is a study centered on the representations of the participants of a continuous training course on the
teaching of poetry, for teachers of the first years of schooling (grade 1 to grade 4) in the Portuguese Educational
System. The aim of this study is to characterize teacher professional knowledge in the area of poetry teaching
through the analysis of teachers' responses to two questionnaire surveys, applied at the beginning and at the end
of the training action, aiming to answer the following questions: what do teachers think about poetry and its teaching and what training needs do the teachers display in this field? The results of this study show the importance
of the characterization of professional teacher knowledge for the designing of training proposals to promote
change in educational practices centered on poetry.
