The active methodologies are a set of pedagogical alternatives that aim to facilitate student learning and/or provide a critical and problematizing education of reality, from the redirection of the student to the center of the knowledge construction process. In view of the above, we conducted a bibliographic research on scientific articles about the theme "Active Methodologies", which were selected from the Capes periodicals portal. The purpose of this study was to present a general characterization of the active methodologies identified in the literature, considering an analysis of the definitions of active methodologies used by the authors, the identification of the main theoretical and epistemological references used to support these methodologies, and an analysis of the different methodologies considered in the literature as active methodologies. In this context, we came up with a definition of active methodologies, which is part of this article. Our results indicate that there has been a growth in research on AM in recent years, with research in the area of Health prevailing. Some articles consider consolidated theorists as a basis for their work, such as: Freire, Dewey, Piaget and Ausubel. We identified a variety of different active methodologies, a total of 24 methodologies were considered as active by the authors present in our sample. In general, the active methodologies present as a common characteristic the idea/definition of a student as the protagonist and the education from a critical perspective.
