Apocalipse, distopia e utopia em Oryx e Crake, de Margaret Atwood

Resumo

Neste artigo analisamos o romance Oryx e Crake (2003), da escritora canadense Margaret Atwood para demonstrar as relações entre apocalipse, distopia e utopia nesta obra. Utilizando como aporte teórico os estudos críticos da utopia e da distopia (CLAEYS, 2013, 2017; KUMAR, 2013; MOYLAN, 1986, 2003) e, também, a teorização de Elizabeth K. Rosen (2008) sobre o apocalipse em narrativas não religiosas da literatura contemporânea, argumentamos que Atwood consegue substituir o agente divino presente nos apocalipses religiosos por um agente humano, uma das personagens do romance, o cientista Crake, preservando, ainda assim, os temas mais básicos desse tipo de narrativa, que são o julgamento, a destruição e a renovação. Além disso, demonstramos como esse apocalipse gera na obra um cenário pós-apocalíptico em que utopia e distopia se entrelaçam através do contraste entre a personagem protagonista do romance e os seres humanoides criados pelo cientista Crake para substituir a humanidade dizimada.
