The Mysteries of Traditional Rituals in Mozambican Literature:

An Analysis Based on the Narrative Mulungu, by Adelino Timóteo

Abstract

This article analyzes African ritualistic mysteries based on the narrative Mulungu (2007), by the contemporary Mozambican writer Adelino Timóteo, aiming to highlight the richness and cultural diversity and identity of Mozambican communities while seeking to deconstruct homogenized views of Africa. In this process, through a critical analysis of the aforementioned narrative, various rites are explored, such as those of fertility, initiation, purification, and celebration, highlighting their importance in shaping social life, ancestry, power relations, and corporeality. The work explores the multiple symbolic and cultural meanings that the body carries during the performative acts of the rituals and constitutes a space for critical understanding of Mozambican literature and African ritualistic practices.
