Abstract

In this study, we used audiovisual recordings to analyze the conversations of 10 family groups during a visit to the temporary exhibition “Oceanos” (Museu da Vida, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) to understand how visitors engage with themes of marine biodiversity conservation. The results provide evidence that the exhibition aroused the interest of families by using objects of different nature to portray topics of interest linked to the family context. Families talked to each other and interacted with the exhibition by sharing information about the oceans and marine biodiversity. Adults adopted facilitating behaviors: asking questions, reading panels and making associations with previous experiences that engaged children. Children actively participated by sharing their knowledge and opinions about the animals. The exhibition sensitized visitors in respect to the pollution of marine ecosystems by offering opportunities for conversation and reflection on behaviors that impact marine biodiversity and ways to protect it.
