Abstract

The revitalization of the Central Public Market of Pelotas brought a different look to the public space. The stage of everyday life ends up being limited by the privatization and partnership of private institutions, the city is faced with a question: whose is the Public Market ? A few years ago, cultural and ethnic diversity was an aspect revealed by the daily lives of citizens when they walked through the Central Public Market of Pelotas. The article aims to point out the impasses of urban requalification that cause a dynamic of gentrification in historic areas. The article questions the relationship between the role of historical buildings in the preservation of a culture and the social memory of a city. Public-private partnerships appear as tensioning tools, which welcome or restrict diversity and artistic and cultural manifestations. Even so, resistance movements claim that the Public Market belongs to the people and for the people.
