In the essay “A nova geração”, published in 1879, Machado de Assis questions the realism attributed to the poet Charles Baudelaire. Realist? The author of the poems “D. Juan aux enfers” and “Tristesse de la lune”? It is precisely the path left by this question that I intend to invest in. The first stage of this research takes as its starting point the fact that Machado participated in the debate on realism, notably when he commented on the work of Eça de Queirós, a debate that circulated beyond national borders through the press, between Europe and Brazil. Based on this context and a certain persistence of the realist epithet attributed to Baudelaire (Laforgue, 2000; Delon et al, 2007), I seek to demonstrate the complexity of this term (Pichois, 2005), with moral and aesthetic senses. Finally, I end this essay by comparing the views of Machado and Baudelaire on this issue, trying to answer the following question: After all, is Machado right not to consider Baudelaire's poetry as realistic?
