Bodies, things and politics of mourning in Huaco retrato (2021), by Gabriela Wiener

This article presents an analysis of the work of mourning performed by the narrator of Peruvian writer Gabriela Wiener’s book Huaco retrato, using Judith Butler’s theory of human vulnerability and the notion of infinite mourning presented by Christian Dunker. The paper also examines the circulation of bodies and things in Wiener’s writing, based on the observations of Roberto Esposito and Aníbal Quijano. Similarly, the notion of atmosphere helps to discuss the production of affection. The results suggest that Huaco retrato questions the unequal distribution of mourning by linking intimate losses to memories of racial discrimination and demands for collective reparations. In the process, the writing of the body reveals the relationship between mourning and desire, challenging the subject/object division that underlies the European paradigm of rationality.
